| 1155 | Excerpt from The Wetaskiwin Times, January 27, 1927, page 1: Halkirk, Alta., Jan. 21--Three dead, two so badly burned that they are not expected to live, and the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Muncy completely destroyed by fire, was the result of a catastrophe, news of which shook this district last night. The Muncy's operate a coal mine and farm on Battle River, 15 miles north of Halkirk. Yesterday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Muncy left home to bury their two-year-old baby and returning in the early evening from that sad rite were dismayed to see their home in flames, while still a distance away. Hurrying to the little settlement in terror of worse news to come, they found that their son Lowell, aged 21, Fay Bean, a young man employee, 23 and Mrs. Raddis, a relative, were burned to death, and that Mr. Raddis and Joseph Airey, brother of Mrs. Raddis, were terribly burned. Dr. Connolly, of Stettler, was reached and attended the victims. The two injured persons have been removed to the Forestburg hospital. This disastrous fire was caused, it is believed, through the explosion of a gasoline lamp which was being attended by one of the victims.
