George Washington Munsey was born in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, in 1782, and died in Gilford, in December 1861. No record has been found of his parents, and it is probable that he was early left an orphan, as it is related that in boyhood he lived in the family of Samuel Blaisdell of Gilford. He was education in the common schools and at Dummer’s Academy at Newberry, Massachusetts, and taught school for a time. He later studied medicine with Dr. Kelley, of Gilmanton, New Hampshire, and practiced in the towns of Moultonborough, Centre Harbor, and Eaton, and was one of the physicians of Gilford for forty years preceding 1856. He was a practitioner of no ordinary ability and skill. He had a large family to support, and the practice in those days was often unremunerative, hence he was at times in straitened circumstances. He was a natural orator, and after the Washingtonian movement he frequently lectured on temperance. He was a Universalist, and in politics a Democrat.

Dr. Munsey married Hannah Barton, who was born in Epsom, September 13, 1784, and died in 1886, having nearly reached the age of one hundred years. They had children as follows:

Melinda married Rev. Josiah Gilman
Benjamin H.
William
Amos Prescott
Susanna
Barton
George W.
Ann Smith
Hannah Barton
David Hale
Sarah G.
Wealthy

The third son, Barton, born March 9, 1812, began life early as a jeweler, and showed rare inventive ability. Later he became a physician of the Electric-Homeopathic schools, and was a successful practitioner. He traveled extensively in this and in foreign countries. The two oldest sons settled at Cape Ann and there engaged in business. The other sons were shoemakers by occupation. The daughters were active in their respective spheres, and one of them became the wife of Rev. Josiah Gilman of Lynn, Massachusetts.

Married 1st, Hannah S. Gilman, March 10, 1836, Gilford, NH.
Married 2nd, Eliza J. Hoyt, April 29, 1860, Gilford, NH.

George W. Munsey early learned the shoemaking business at Meredith Bridge, with one Mugget, and for many years pursued the business at the village. David Hale Munsey [brother] and Amos Prescot Munsey [son of George W.] also carried on the business, in connection with George W.

George W. and D. H. Munsey were also dealers in leather. The sole-leather trade was considerable. In later years ready-made shoes, for sale in shoe stores, supplied the greater part of the demand, so that, with a greater population and larger volume of business in the shoe line, the custom-workers were less. It was the almost universal custom for each man to buy a stock of leather and have it made into shoes and boots for the family on measure. The first settlers rarely had boots, but used the shoe and buckskin, and some thought it a sinful extravagance to wear boots, especially of calf-skin.

He later kept a general store at Gilford, and also owned a farm in that village, which he cultivated, at least by proxy. In religious faith he was a Free Will Baptist. He married Hannah Gilman, who was born there in 1817, and died in 1859, aged forty-two years. Her parents were Jeremiah and Betsey (Hodgedon) Gilman. The children of this union were: John G., Hannah, Edwin, Mary, and Park.

killed in accidental nitroglycerin blast; brother Coleman severly injured

*Blast Block Away Kills Worker*
Car Wrecked, Men Stripped, By Explosion Near Cromwell

Impact of the explosion of a nitro-glycerin magazine more than a 100 yards away snuffed out the life of J.S. Muncy and injured his brother, Coleman, perhaps fatality, Monday night near Cromwell. The blast shook buildings in the town nearly a mile to the southeast. No cause for the explosion is known, and another magazine, a city block away, was not detonated by the heavy jar.

The force of the explosion stripped the clothes from both men and wrecked their small car. It was overturned with J.S. Muncy's body beneath it. When nearby oil field workers rushed up, the brother has succeeded in removing the body from beneath the auto. He collasped soon afterward.

First aid was given him by doctor J.C. Pitchford who found fractured ribs, in addition to cuts and lacraations about the face, limbs and body. Later he was taken to a hospital in Okemah.

Immediately after the blast crowds rushed out from Crowell to give help. Where the two sheet iron houses had been they found only a crater, more than fifteen feet across and three or four feet deep. Not even a scrap of sheet-iron was left in the vicinity of the blast.

The magazines were the property of oil well torpedo companies, for storing explosives used in "shooting" wells.

The survivor of the blast was suffering from the severe shock and Doctor Pitchford did not make a thorough examination, but sent him on to the hospital after giving first aid treatment, he said. He was in a semi-conscious condition and unable to tell what caused the explosion, if he knew.

County and city officers were investigating Monday night to find a reason for the detonation. No hint as to the cause was found.

J.S. Muncy was 35 years old, and leaves a wife and two children. Both had been employed in the oil fields.

Although the highly-explosive nitro-glycerin is packed so that it can be carried in an auto, oil well "shooters" were at a loss to understand why the terrific force of the blast did not discharge the second magazine.
