- Helen was born and spent her early life in the extreme southwestern tip of Virginia. She is listed as the oldest of five children in the 1940 census for White Shoals Township, Lee County, VA, in the home of Dan and Glessie Munsey. A sixth child, a girl, was born in 1943. A Virginia delayed birth certificate lists her father’s name as Daniel Martin Munsey; another Virginia delayed birth certificate lists her mother’s name as Glessie Pearl Hedrick. Both were reportedly born Jonesville, Lee County, VA, and they were married there in 1930.
Virginia delayed birth records show the four girl’s names and dates of birth. On her record her name is given as Helen Fern Munsey. Helen’s youngest sibling, Linda was born in Lee County, VA in 1943, so the family apparently was still in Virginia in that year. High school yearbook records for Mitchell High School, Mitchell, Indiana have entries for Helen and most of her siblings from 1946 into the mid 1950’s. These records indicate the family relocated to Lawrence County, Indiana sometime between 1943 and 1946. Death records for both parents show they died in Lawrence County Indiana; Glesseye (sic) died there in 1958. City Directories for Bedford, county seat for Lawrence County, has entries in 1952, 1955, and 1956 for Helen F. Munsey and for her father with the notation “Mitchell 3”. Other sources showed their address as Rural Route 3, Mitchell, IN, so she was living there at least until 1956.
By at least 1987, Helen and family were living in Hockessin, DE, and were members at Grace Lutheran Church, there.
