  “San Antonio Express”, p. 3 November 25, 1884 “Death of Alexander A. Muncey” “Mr. Muncey died very suddenly at his residence on Houston Street, on Sunday evening, Nov. 23rd, at 10 o’clock, from rheumatism of the heart. Though he had been in ill health for two weeks past suffering from ulcers of the stomach, he had apparently recovered and had been able to attend to his usual duties on Saturday. His death was therefore as unexpected to his family as it will be to the public. “Mr. Muncey was nearly 62 years of age at the time of his death, having been born in Virginia in January, 1823. He came to San Antonio in 1837, residing here almost continually ever since. During the war with Mexico he commanded a regiment of Virginia volunteers and did good services for his country as a Major. He was also a member of the celebrated Nicaragua expedition under General Walker. Just before the breaking out of the late civil war Mr. Muncey was engaged here in the dry goods business with Mr. Evans, and had the largest house of the kind in the state, and was for a long term of years engaged in the overland stage business. For the past two years Mr. Muncey held the position of city weigher, and had just been elected on the people’s ticket to the office of county weigher. He was known to all our people as a gentleman of honor and integrity, and his death will be universally regretted by the community in which he has lived for so many years. The funeral ceremonies were conducted at the residence, at the Episcopal Cathedral and at the grave by Rev. His family migrated to Bledsoe County, TN in his infancy. He married Mary Eliza Sappington, in San Antonio, daughter of a deceased Doctor Mark Brown Sapington who died in Memphis, TN in 1852.” (from email in submitted by James A.
