MUNCY, HUBERT B. (SARGE) - age 77, of Harrogate, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville. Born in Claiborne County, Tenn., April 22, 1921, he was the son of the late Etta Brooks Muncy and Charlie Muncy. He retired from the US Army where he excelled to a Master Marksman, to a Master Paratrooper and to the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a Charter member of the Army's prestigious 82nd Airborne. He shot rifles and pistols competitively on the Army's Marksmanship teams. In 1956, he won the military's competitive individual rifle matches at Basec, France. In 1958, he was the 82nd Airborne Division's individual rifle championship winner. His military service, over 20 years, took him to at least eight Army bases in the US. He was in combat in Panama, France, Germany, and was also stationed in Austria. He lost several close friends at the famous Normandy Beach Invasion. Three of his deceased brothers also served in the US Armed Forces during World War II. Over the years he attended the Shawnee Baptist Church, the Landmark Baptist Church and the Harrogate Church of Christ. He professed faith in Christ at an early age. He served Claiborne County as a Constable, Reserve Deputy Sheriff, as well as County Commissioner. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US and a member of the American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son, David Cogar; and five brothers, Porter, Roy, Ishmael, Lawrence and Otie Muncy, all of Claiborne County; as well as one grandson, Jack Allen Muncy, Jr., Norris. Survivors include: his wife, Mary Ruth Debusk Muncy; daughter, Mary Ann Proffitt, Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Jack Allen Muncy, Sr. and Beverly Johnson Muncy; sister, Lucille Ulrey, Aurora, Neb.; half-brother, John Muncy, Mechanicsburg, Ohio; three granddaughters, Mona Proffitt Tarver and Anna Proffitt Gaeslen, Knoxville, and Mariah Muncy, Norris; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation on Saturday, April 3, from 3-5 p.m. with funeral services at 5 p.m. An official Honor Guard burial will be on Monday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in the National Veterans Cemetery off Tyson Street, Knoxville, with James Callahan presiding.
